The programme aims at protecting Lake Managua by securing economically efficient and environmentally friendly water supply and sanitation in the cities of Managua, Tipitapa and Ciudad Sandino. To achieve this objective, the programme is divided into 5 projects consisting in the extension and optimization of sewer networks, wastewater treatment plants, and the water supply systems in these municipalities of Lake Managua, as well as construction of a wastewater treatment plant in the city of Tipitapa.

Technical data

  • Sanitation: 214 km of main and secondary sewers, 12 km of pressure lines, 3,292 inspection shafts and 16,452 house connections
  • 7 sewage pumping stations
  • Extension of the Managua WWTP incl. energy generation from biogas
  • Extension of the WWTP in Ciudad Sandino
  • Construction of the WWTP in Tipitapa: UASB reactors, filtration and UV disinfection
  • Water supply of Tipitapa: 13 wells, 7.42 km transmission main, 14.08 km pressure line, 60.53 km distribution network and storage tanks with an overall capacity of 9,928 m³
